Here are some of my favorites for adults and kids, home and classroom! 💙
Adult Nonfiction
The Underworld
by Susan Casey
This book is part science, part adventure. Casey takes a journalistic approach, interviewing scientists and explorers and going out into the ocean herself. She begins with a history of deep ocean exploration and brings us to today. The best part is that as the reader, you get to follow along.
The Deepest Map
by Laura Trethewey
The author goes on a journey to tackle the science of mapping the seafloor and the politics. Who owns the seafloor? What happens when we know more about it –– and will we protect the ocean or exploit it?
Ocean: The Definitive Visual Guide
by DK Publishing
This is a wonderful book that explains all sorts of oceanographic concepts––an encyclopedia of all things ocean. I used it extensively for researching If You Went to the Bottom of the Ocean. Adults will enjoy poring through it, but so will kids with some help –– it would be a great reference or conversation starter.
Children's Nonfiction
There are so many wonderful ocean books...and I have not read them all! These were especially captivating.
